The Berkshire business 'Love Heartwood' is run by Liz Pearson, a passionate woodturner dedicated to providing eco-conscious families with high-quality, handmade wooden toys and homeware. Her products are crafted from locally sourced, sustainable wood, ensuring a healthy and safe play experience for children. They can be made even more special by adding a personalisation. With a focus on connecting families to nature, she not only creates beautiful and durable toys and homeware, but also offers a wooden toy repair service and woodturning sessions, empowering others to embrace the art of woodturning.
1. Do you have any professional making qualifications or did you do a course?
My professional qualifications consist of a BA in Product Design but I'm a self taught woodturner. I also have a background in education having worked as a teacher for children aged from 0 to 18 years of age.
2. Where do you get your ideas?
My ideas come from a variety of sources. Initially I was inspired by my own children and their interests (rattle, spinning top, toy car), but I've also made toys in response to customer requests (whipping top, cup and ball game) and in order to create a more sustainable version of a plastic toy (pencil top).
3. How long does one of your toys take to make?
It really depends. The quickest to make is a spinning top at about 7 minutes. The one that takes the longest is a skittles set. A full set takes 2 hours.
4. What's your favourite toy?
My favourite is The Spinning Top Set and Wooden Base. This is because it's fun for all ages and you can all play together.
5. Are you working on anything new at the moment?
I'm about to launch a spinning top in the shape of a Christmas tree but I'm really excited about the wooden doll I'm currently working on. It's still in the development stage but I'm hoping it'll be completed by September 2024.
